- REPRESSION OF SOCIALISTS IN EGYPT
-
- The Center for Socialist Studies calls upon all democratic and nationalist groups in Egypt and all activists in the international antiglobalization, antiwar and anti-dictatorship movements to express their solidarity with our struggle against the oppressive Egyptian regime.
Appeal: Support the “Center for Socialist Studies” against the oppressive and restrictive regime
On Friday afternoon, the 28th of January 2005, Security forces at the Cairo International Book Fair arrested Marwa Farouk, activist at the Center for Socialist Studies, lawyer at the Shalakany law firm and member of the bar association, and Baho Abdallah, a non-Egyptian friend of Marwa’s who is a postgraduate student at the American university in Cairo, from in front of the Cultural club at the Book Fair. Both were charged of disseminating false propaganda against the regime. After less than an hour an officer and his police assistant at the Book Fair physically aggressed Ibrahim El Sahari, activist at the center and then arrested him for the same charges in addition to the charge of aggression against an officer inside the police station!! The police confiscated a copy of a recent publication of the center titled “Socialists’ route to change: a militant socialist vision for change in Egypt”; (the book has an official registration number (864/2005)); a copy of the last issue (no. 7) of “Socialist Papers”, a magazine produced by the center; a number of publicity brochures of the center; in addition to a call for a peaceful rally to be organized by the Popular Committee for Change at the Book Fair on the 4th of February 2005. All three were summoned in front of the state security prosecution office, which decided to extend their imprisonment for 15 days.
On Sunday the 30th of January 2005, security forces at the Book Fair confiscated all copies of the above mentioned book, “Socialists’ route to change”, which was exhibited in Hall 4, in the booth of Merit Publishing House. They also confiscated all copies of the last issue of Socialist Papers, which contains a whole section on change in Egypt. This is despite the fact that all those publications are public ones, fulfilling all legal requirements for publication.
This aggressive attack against the Center for Socialist Studies is a reaction to the center’s clear and strong position against the dictatorship of the ruling regime in Egypt. The center has been publicly and openly struggling for democracy for the people and bread for the poor. This flagrant oppression of an authority that has no means to protect its throne other than the use of police brutality, is a direct result of the center’s active participation and involvement in the ongoing campaigns against a new mandate for Mubarak, against the inheritance of the presidency and for a true democracy in Egypt.
The oppression of the center’s activists and the confiscation of its publications is in reality meant to carry a message to all freedom and democracy fighters in Egypt. The aim of that message is to terrorize all those who joined forces to achieve one pressing objective: the defense of the right of our people to rule itself by itself after 25 years of emergency laws, detentions, exceptional laws, torture in police stations and in state intelligence centers. We therefore believe that supporting the Center for Socialist Studies and its right to struggle for democracy should be the concern of all freedom fighters in Egypt and the world and should be an integral element of the campaign for democracy, which joins a large number of political opposition groups in Egypt.
The Center for Socialist Studies calls upon all democratic and nationalist groups in Egypt and all activists in the international antiglobalization, antiwar and anti-dictatorship movements to express their solidarity with our struggle against the oppressive Egyptian regime. This should not be the battle of the Center for Socialist Studies alone.. This should be the battle of all democratic groups in Egypt and worldwide. It has to be fought to the end, since freedom is never given for free. It has to be fought for!
