Link to photos showing Paris checkpoint and community resistance
Last summer there were three tragic building fires in Paris which killed mainly immigrants. Rather than address issues such as the availability of accessible, safe and affordable housing the French state used these tragedies as a cover for their ongoing campaign against the “sans-papiers” (illegal immigrants). The authorities in Paris have set up regular ID checkpoints (resulting in detentions, immediate evictions and expulsions) targetting the “sans-papiers” in areas such as subway exits . The link above is to a series of photographs showing such a checkpoint and detentions in central Paris. What makes the photographs unique is that it also shows resistance from the local population forcing the police to end their operation.
