Dita Sari, an Indonesian political prisoner profiled in the last issue of NEW SOCIALIST, was released from prison on July 3, 1999, after being granted amnesty by Indonesian president Habibie, a crony of ousted dictator Suharto.
﻿<br﻿>﻿<br﻿>﻿
Dita Sari was sentenced to five years in prison for subversion in July of 1997. She was imprisoned for her trade unionist, feminist, and pro-democratic activism under the Suharto regime. She was arrested with other labour activists in May 1996 after leading a 20 000 strong strike in Surabaya. She is a member of the radical People's Democratic Party and was the chairperson of the Indonesian Centre for Labour Struggle.

While leaving the prison, Dita Sari declared that her release was not out of "...the mercy of the government, but a pure political measure." According to Sari, the government is trying to increase its popularity while still continuing to oppress the people of Indonesia and East Timor.

Dita Sari will now concentrate on building the new worker's organisation, the Indonesian National Front for Labour Struggles. She is also planning to tour Australia on behalf of Action in Solidarity with Indonesia and East Timor (ASIET) which campaigned for her release. International solidarity was a key reason why Habibie felt pressure to release Sari.

Sari called for the release of other political prisoners especially Budiman Sutjatmeko, the chairperson of the PRD and Xanana Gusmao, the leader of the East Timorese resistance movement.
