However, there have been a number of setbacks. The decline in resistance to the war is a disappointing failure for the movement. The state has also dealt a series of blows, including rapid increases in the militarization of protest zones, increased racial profiling, continued under-funding for social services and the new anti-terrorists legislation. ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ Yet the resistance continues. Activists around the globe are currently engaged in discussions about the protest that will take place on June 26-27 while the G-8 ministers meet in Kananaskis, Alberta - a wilderness area that was long ago taken from the Cree people. The debate that has arisen over how and where to mobilise against the G-8 could either turn the anti-globalization movement in a new direction or further marginalize it. ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ In considering the strategy of organizing a mass migration to Alberta for the G-8 meetings, we need to ask two fundamental questions: at what cost? and for whom? Currently, the cheapest way to travel out to Alberta from Toronto runs at a ticket price of at least $500.00. At this rate, it would cost $100 000 to transport only 200 privileged activists to the protest. With that amount of money, imagine all of the things that we could do to stop the corporate agenda and support the members of our community who struggle each and every day to survive in a capitalist world. ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ But can we risk not going? Consider this: over the past two years the anti-globalization movement has successfully raised the consciousness of the public by putting the issues of trade, globalization and corporate control on the forefront. Anti-globalization activists have successfully slowed down and clogged the corporate machines of destruction. And in so doing, we've planted the seeds for an alternative social order. ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ It is for this reason and many more that activists need to mobilize not only in Kananaskis, but also locally and regionally. Through local and regional mass actions we can build upon the seeds already planted by the movement. ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ But we need to organize in ways that are inclusive rather than exclusive, breaking down white, male, middle class privilege rather than reproducing it. In this critical period, the way forward is to diversify our tactics and encourage grassroots local activism. Rather than focusing on our differences, we need to realise our struggles are the same and must be unified to win. ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ This summer, along with mobilisations in Kananaskis, activists are also organising local and regional oppositions to the G8 in an explicit effort to bring the movement into the communities rather than expecting the community to go to it. The Northeast Regional Solidarity Action "Take Back the Capital" organizing for actions in Ottawa is one example of a local mobilization that is underway. Nova Scotia Mobilization for Global Justice is also planning to host a regional action in June. ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ Local actions will not only target the G-8, but also the power that resides in the corporate offices, banks and state buildings in our individual communities or the federal capital - Ottawa. In this way, activists are connecting the struggle with people's daily lives. ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ It is to be hoped that local and regional solidarity actions this summer will have the impact of integrating the local-global connection into the anti-globalization agenda over the long term. This is the agenda for building an international movement that is both broad-based and unified. ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ ÿþ<fontÿþ ÿþsize="1"ÿþ>ÿþDenise Hammond is active in Toronto Mobilization for Global Justice and a member of the New Socialist Group.ÿþ</font>ÿþ</font>ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ ÿþ<formÿþ>ÿþ<inputÿþ ÿþtype="button"ÿþ ÿþvalue="Close"ÿþ ÿþonclick="top.close()"ÿþ>ÿþ</form>ÿþ ÿþ</body>ÿþ ÿþ</html>ÿþ<!-- FILE ARCHIVED ON ÿþ12:11:10 Oct 12, 2007ÿþ AND RETRIEVED FROM THE INTERNET ARCHIVE ON ÿþ07:21:28 Mar 05, 2026ÿþ.
