The following guidelines are ideal targets. People should not be discouraged from submitting graphics if they do not meet all of these requirements, but should be encouraged to meet as many of them as possible. The cover specs are less flexible than the guts specs.
FOR COVER IMAGES:
Image size: 5"x 9" (landscape strip) or 12" x 9" (full page)
Resolution: 300 dpi minimum
Format: CMYK, tiff
FOR GUTS
Image size: 3.5" x 8" (landscape strip) or 3"-10" x 3.5" (vertical column strip)
Resolution: 150 dpi minimum
Format: grey scale, tiff
PREPARATION
-Graphics should be supplied ready for insertion into document with minimal editing at the time of production
-Gray scale images should be set at a relatively high contrast, minimizing the number of half tones. A good guideline is to adjust contrast until key details in image begin to disappear, then to set contrast just below this level (use curves rather than "brightness/contrast" function to achieve this).
-For black and white and line art images, contrast should be set so that white portions appear as "true white" i.e.: do not show grey film when printed.
-Scanned images should be cleaned up so that they are cleanly cropped and that all dust and scratches have been removed.
