A number of resolutions were passed by this CFS annual general meeting with their focus being on directing student activists to focus their energy on "the real source" of "neo-liberal and neo-conservative cost cutting agendas: corporate tax breaks and unchecked profits". ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ February 7th will see thousands of students participate in walkouts from classes, teach-ins and demonstrations outside banks and multinational corporations who pay virtually no tax and are the loudest in calling for the end to Canada's "unaffordable" social programs. The CFS will be working with coalition partners from the Labour, Women's and anti-poverty movement in order to make this day of action a success. Action committees have already been set up and formed in a number of cities and plans to outreach to the community are well under way. ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ Despite the lead which the CFS has given, the impact and success of February 7th is still very much up in the air. On January 25th last year some 75 000 students protested across the country to oppose Axworthy and the Federal Liberal budget cuts, yet the student anti-cuts movement has stayed dead in its tracks since then. The real question and challenge for the anti cuts movement will manifest itself on February 8th when we'll find out if students will return to classes and be satisfied with their one day of protest, or whether a sufficient number of them be able to take the struggle further and organize themselves around ongoing actions against the cuts ? The key to extending and deepening the resistance to the full-scale attacks on our social programs will be the success that activists have in creating lasting action committees to continue in the organization of educational meetings, rallies, demonstrations, walkouts and occupations against the cuts. ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ Its important that all activists and socialists be involved in building for and planning this day of action. In Ontario is quite possible that a city wide general strike will be occurring around this time, thus making February 7th an excellent time to make the links between cuts to education and attacks on labour and the poor. It is doubtful whether the actions on February 7th, no matter how large, will force the government to back down, but the importance of this day in laying the ground work for a stronger and more focused student anti cuts movement should not be underestimated. ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ ÿþ<formÿþ>ÿþ<inputÿþ ÿþtype="button"ÿþ ÿþvalue="Close"ÿþ ÿþonclick="top.close()"ÿþ>ÿþ</form>ÿþ ÿþ</body>ÿþ ÿþ</html>ÿþ<!-- FILE ARCHIVED ON ÿþ20:03:33 Jun 26, 2010ÿþ AND RETRIEVED FROM THE INTERNET ARCHIVE ON ÿþ09:22:08 Mar 05, 2026ÿþ.
