The album features many of the staples musically and lyrically that previous fans will recognize and appreciate. The percussive guitar work is just as powerful as on previous albums but with a new edge, a different tone. The clever lines and choppy rhythm allow the lyrics to hit with an impact only Ani could create encouraging emotions ranging from discomfort to anger to swoony gooieness in the listener. This doesn't mean that this is just another Ani album though. Everything has been taken somewhere new and different. ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ Since the explosion of the genre known as 'womyn's music', Ani has been carving out a distinct place amidst it all. Playing outside of either the acceptable traditional folk camp and being far too precise to allow the term "riot grrrl" to be applicable, DiFranco plays folk music with the attitude of Bikini Kill and the style and political clarity of Phil Ochs ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ "Not a Pretty Girl" has a more personal focus than some of the previous albums by DiFranco, who is generally very outspoken politically. The new album focuses primarily on the personal experiences of the artist, sat as alwayts against the backdrop of a hectic, crisis-prone New York City. Hard-hitting lyrics bring the political foundation of DiFranco's understanding of the world into focus. On "Cradle and All", she remarks cynically, "I could be discovered -- I could be colonized." ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ The last track on the album is a red-one version of an old spoken word piece from "Imperfectly" called "Coming Up". DiFrance says it perfectly in this song by stating, "whoever's in charge up there better take the elevator down and put more than change in our cup -- or else WE ARE COMING UP". Say it loud. ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ Look for Ani DiFranco on tour in Southern Ontario during the early spring. ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ ÿþ<formÿþ>ÿþ<inputÿþ ÿþtype="button"ÿþ ÿþvalue="Close"ÿþ ÿþonclick="top.close()"ÿþ>ÿþ</form>ÿþ ÿþ</body>ÿþ ÿþ</html>ÿþ<!-- FILE ARCHIVED ON ÿþ20:02:10 Jun 26, 2010ÿþ AND RETRIEVED FROM THE INTERNET ARCHIVE ON ÿþ09:26:21 Mar 05, 2026ÿþ.
