What happens over the next couple of months will affect social struggles throughout North America.ÿþ</b>ÿþ ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ The Ontario Federation of Labour in conjunction with groups like the Ontario Coalition for Social Justice has called for two days of mass action -- strikes, rallies and demonstrations -- in Toronto and vicinity against the Harris agenda. Local unions and community organizations are rallying to the call for action on Friday, October 25 and Saturday, October 26. Already some groups are planning to extend activities across a number of days leading up to the 25th and 26th. ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ The October actions will represent the fifth in a series of days of protest in Ontario. Since last winter, days of strikes and demonstrations have been held in London, Hamilton, Kitchener-Waterloo, and Peterborough. Workers in these cities have struck and tens of thousands of people -- in the case of Hamilton fully 100,000 people -- have marched through the streets. These have been extremely important anti-Harris mobilizations. But everyone recognizes that the Toronto actions represent a watershed. Labour and social movements now have an opportunity to bring the struggle into the streets of the largest city in the country. It is an opportunity we cannot afford to squander. ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ It is vital that every person committed to stopping the Harris assaults on women, the poor, people of colour, students, and working people in general becomes part of the organizing efforts for the October days of action. The struggle needs to be broadened out with open, grassroots committees that encourage the fullest participation of everyone who wants to fight back. ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ This issue of New Socialist is dedicated to helping to build the most powerful and democratic mobilizations possible in October. To that end, we have interviewed activists about their views on building the anti-Harris movement and have looked at some of the lessons for organized labour from the 1976 general strike against the Trudeau government. ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ We do this in an effort to contribute ideas and experiences to the anti-Harris mobilizations that lie ahead. At the same time, we want to continue to make sure that we do not forget the way in which these struggles connect with other movements against oppression in this country and beyond. To that end, we look at the native struggle for land in B.C. We analyze the struggles of AIDS activists around the International AIDS conference held in Vancouver this summer. And we talk with an activist who was involved in the recent uprising against the military-backed government of Indonesia. ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ Learning from and contributing to all these struggles is vital to building the sort of open, democratic movement we will need to stop the right-wing agenda, and to begin to organize much more broadly for the kind of genuinely socialist movement we will need if the vast majority of people are to bring about real and meaningful changes in their lives. ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ So, here's hoping you enjoy the latest issue of New Socialist.
