The Chrysler settlement was greeted in the plant with a general feeling of relief. There was definitely a feeling that there was going to be a strike. People didn't believe that Chrysler would accept the restrictions on outsourcing the union was demanding, despite the company's incredible profits. 



ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ

Overall, the contract language on outsourcing was seen as a real victory. The union leadership presented it as an ironclad guarantee of job security. Of course, they did point out that it depended on market conditions and so on, but to many members it sounded like some sort of guarantee. 



ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ

The problem is that this agreement in no way prevents management from using time study and job reorganization to eliminate jobs by redistributing the work among other already existing jobs. The reality of all this is demonstrated by recent significant layoffs (perhaps 100 people, reaching back to people with well over a year of seniority). 



ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ

There is a feeling in the plant that these layoffs are connected to the company's contractual obligation to hire some two hundred people to accommodate the extra weeks off (SPA weeks) in the new agreement. There was a suggestion that the contract included a commitment to two hundred new hires. Instead, it may end up being people laid off because management has found new ways of making most people work harder and laying others off.
