She was interviewed by Janis Kaleta. APEC stands for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, a "free trade" pact among governments of the region.ÿþÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ ÿþ<bÿþ>ÿþI would like to start our discussion of Canadian colonialism and its relation to APEC by looking at the displacement of aboriginal people in Canada. ÿþÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ I find it obnoxious that the Queen would arrive in Canada promoting the farce of Cabot's arrival on the Eastern Coast of Canada [since] there is no proof that he landed here [and given that] there is very minimal pronouncement of the annihilation of the First Nation over there, the Beothuk Nation. ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ ÿþ<bÿþ>ÿþTurning to the Women's Conference this past weekend, can you identify any highlights in terms of discussion of the role of aboriginal women in building communities of resistance? ÿþÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ Indigenous women have participated in the environmental movement in Canada as well as having participated in [the raising of] women's voices for art and health budgets in the Vancouver area. In the 1970s indigenous women participated in the founding of a seat in the UN for the indigenous peoples of the world. Most of us are welfarized and poor and without backup for furthering the education of our children. So I think that the impetus for survival for all of us comes when we turn to our elders and keep that flow of information coming from our elders to our youth, with our youth being trained to assert their thoughts and their voices to their communities. ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ ÿþ<bÿþ>ÿþCan you say something about the Native Youth Movement? ÿþÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ The Native Youth Movement is newly derived and they recently occupied the treaty office because their main concern was that the youth are denied information. They are excluded from having a voice and they are concerned that their lifestyles are going to be exterminated by the policies on the table. ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ ÿþ<bÿþ>ÿþThere's a link between the communities you work with in the Downtown Eastside and the neo-liberal agenda, translated into a lack of services and housing, wouldn't you say? ÿþÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ Yes, for example the last international gathering here, Expo 86, saw the alleged cleaning up of the Downtown Eastside. Rents went up, and a lot of the downtown population couldn't afford to live in residences where they had lived their entire lives. It's been happening again now for the last two years; the rent for social housing has gone up, and buildings are closing like a mad fire out of control. The low income people are being pushed out of the downtown area and have nowhere to go, so we have hundreds of people downtown who are homeless, never mind the indigenous people that have been homeless for the last 120 years, since the colonization of the Vancouver area. ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ The mainstream are now the new Indians of the Americas because the fascist colonizers have seen to it that the mainstream themselves have the right to contaminated water, land, and air. Thus you see disabled people without a voice, you see indigenous people without a voice, you see the people downtown with no housing without a voice, you see the working class protesting the government, for example the Ministry of Social Service workers protesting the NDP government's ideology of the delivery of social services to the province, protesting that their hands are tied, that they can't help the people that they are paid to serve. ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ ÿþ<bÿþ>ÿþHere in Vancouver how can we reach out to other communities and make links between aboriginal rights and APEC? ÿþÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ I'd say that if we joined with the environmental and human rights groups we could develop a strong, united voice against the extermination of the people who live in the Vancouver area and who are treated as dispensable by the APEC campaign. They want us to condemn the right to life of people the world over by permitting APEC to be here. To create the abortion of justice on not only the indigenous, but also the other populations that are living here. To me, APEC means a big, festering cancer that is moving to our area. ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ ÿþ<formÿþ>ÿþ<inputÿþ ÿþtype="button"ÿþ ÿþvalue="Close"ÿþ ÿþonclick="top.close()"ÿþ>ÿþÿþ ÿþ
ÿþ ÿþ
ÿþ<!-- FILE ARCHIVED ON ÿþ20:56:10 Jun 26, 2010ÿþ AND RETRIEVED FROM THE INTERNET ARCHIVE ON ÿþ09:45:09 Mar 05, 2026ÿþ.
