In September 1995 the Mersey Docks and Harbour Company (MDHC) used their refusal to cross a picket line set up by other dockworkers as a pretext for firing them and employing a scab workforce. ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ The struggle being waged by the Liverpool dockworkers has evolved into a global struggle between dockworkers and their bosses as dockworkers around the world have repeatedly staged international days of action in solidarity with their counterparts in Liverpool. Furthermore, these actions have given this struggle global significance insofar as it has also become a struggle against the implementation of lean production methods in the global transportation industry. ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ This struggle took a dramatic turn in October when west coast supporters dealt a blow to the Neptune Orient Lines for their use of the MDHC-owned facilities in Thamesport, England. Members of a Liverpool solidarity committee in Oakland, CA set up a picket against the "Neptune Jade" which was scheduled to unload seven containers. For several days members of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) successfully resisted attempts to force them to cross the picket line. Finally the ship's owners gave up trying to unload the cargo in Oakland and sailed to Vancouver, B.C. hoping to unload the seven containers and transport them by truck back to California. ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ These hopes were dashed when 22 Vancouver supporters of the Liverpool Dockers set up another militant picket line against the Jade in the Port of Vancouver and when ILWU members again refused to cross it. On the afternoon of Friday, Oct. 3, activists in the Liverpool Dockers Solidarity Network (LDSN) received confirmation from their Bay Area counterparts that the Jade would be arriving in the Vancouver Terminal at approximately 7 AM, Saturday, Oct. 4. This was all the time that was needed to organize supporters, who arrived at the Port with placards shortly before 8 AM to meet the morning shift. The demonstrators stayed in the pouring rain until they were sure that no work would be done on the Jade for the duration of that shift. A contingent was organized to meet the next shift, but this became unnecessary when it was revealed that the Jade was giving up and heading to Japan. ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ The Vancouver dockers' supporters reflected a cross section of local activism. Organizations that were represented included the New Socialist Group; SIKLAB, a group that organizes Philippine migrant workers, including seafarers; the Philippine Youth Alliance; the No! to APEC Coalition; Socialist Challenge; the International of Hope; International Socialists; Communist League; and others. The people present included trade unionists, students, and social justice activists. The event was documented on video by a member of Working TV, a show broadcast on community cable. ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ The campaign in Canada to reinstate the Liverpool Dockers has reached a new level. More and more Canadians are finding out the truth about Liverpool, and the action against the Jade furthered that process. The LDSN hopes that Vancouver's boycott of the Neptune Jade strengthens the resolve of our sisters and brothers in Liverpool to fight until victory is achieved. Until justice prevails in Liverpool we will ensure that there will be no peace for shippers in Canada. In particular we are serving notice to Canadian Pacific subsidiaries CanMar/CAST that we are intensifying our campaign against their continued use of scab labour in Liverpool. Shipping corporations will be forced to reckon with the fact that the working class has no country and that an injury to one is an injury to all. ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ ÿþ<fontÿþ ÿþsize="1"ÿþ>ÿþFor more info on the Liverpool campaign visit the Dockers' website at www.labournet.org.ukÿþÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ ÿþ<fontÿþ ÿþsize="1"ÿþ>ÿþThis report was compiled for the LDSN by Janis Kaleta, Heidi Swierenga, and TJ Baker, with background information by Bruce Allen.ÿþÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ ÿþ<fontÿþ ÿþface="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"ÿþ ÿþsize="5"ÿþ ÿþcolor="#000000"ÿþ>ÿþ ÿþ<centerÿþ>ÿþ ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ ÿþ<bÿþ>ÿþWomen of the Waterfront Canadian Tour ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþÿþÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ ÿþ
ÿþ As this issue of New Socialist goes press, a benefit tour of the Liverpool Dockers support group, Women of the Waterfront (WoW) is under way. From November 20 to 30 two WoW members, Marie Eustace and Valerie Bibby, will speak to the media and at public events in at least ten cities and participate in the Ontario Federation of Labour Convention, the Alberta Federation of Labour School, as well as in solidarity actions for striking workers, including Fletcher Challenge Canada strikers in B.C. (see article on page x). ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ Part of the message that WoW wants to deliver in Canada is that "it is very important that we have physical actions against companies that are using the Port of Liverpool where the ships are being handled by SCAB labour. Canadian Pacific shipping lines CanMar and CAST are among those that are still using the Port of Liverpool. We do not and would not expect people to put their own jobs in jeopardy but people the world over must be made aware what is happening here in Liverpool as it really is a global problem." ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ The WoW tour was organized by the Liverpool Dockers Solidarity Network, with branches of the New Socialist Group helping organize events in several cities. As part of building for this tour, the NSG has co-sponsored screenings of the Ken Loach documentary "The Flickering Flame" in Vancouver, Ottawa, and Toronto. This film recounts the Dockers struggle and highlights the negative role that their own union, the Transport and General Workers Union, has played since the beginning of this "unofficial" dispute. To our knowledge, these are the first public showings of the film in Canada. ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ The February/March issue of New Socialist will feature an in-depth report on the Tour and some of the issues that were raised as a result of it. ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ ÿþ<fontÿþ ÿþsize="1"ÿþ>ÿþFor information on future activities of the LDSN or to get involved in the Liverpool campaign, e-mail Bruce Allen at praxis1871@aol.com, or contact a branch of the NSG near you.ÿþÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ ÿþ<formÿþ>ÿþ<inputÿþ ÿþtype="button"ÿþ ÿþvalue="Close"ÿþ ÿþonclick="top.close()"ÿþ>ÿþÿþ ÿþ
ÿþ ÿþ
ÿþ<!-- FILE ARCHIVED ON ÿþ20:12:29 Jun 26, 2010ÿþ AND RETRIEVED FROM THE INTERNET ARCHIVE ON ÿþ09:47:23 Mar 05, 2026ÿþ.
