He edited and wrote numerous publications, many of which were produced when he was an autoworker. Many socialists have been inspired by the writings made available by Glaberman and have benefited from his insight. The legacy of the numerous classes he gave on Marx's Capital to socialist groups and individuals will survive him. ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ Although his political involvement began in the early 1930's at the age of 13, it was in 1941 when he began his collaboration with C.L.R. James and other members of the Johnson-Forest Tendency. They believed that both the Soviet Union and capitalist countries were moving to a new stage of capitalism, state capitalism. Public ownership, whether in capitalist countries or in the Soviet Union, did not necessarily mean that workers had control over the means of production. ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ Glaberman and others in this tendency attempted to correct what they saw as the subordination of black struggles by the white working class and other Marxist organizations. The notion of the vanguard party was questioned and finally rejected. The workers' councils of the 1956 Hungarian revolution illustrated to them that the working class did not need a party to direct it to revolution. This organized current existed in a number of forms until it was dissolved at the initiative of Glaberman in 1970. ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ Many of Glaberman's writings consider the role of workers themselves in both creating bureaucratic organizations like unions and challenging them. Anyone seeking answers to why labour has withdrawn themselves from struggles during the Summit of the Americas in Quebec City and the Ontario Conservative convention last month will find Glaberman essential reading. ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ A selection of Martin Glaberman's writings can be found at: http://ca.geocities.com/red_black_ca/bewick.htm. ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ ÿþ<fontÿþ ÿþsize="1"ÿþ>ÿþPeter Graham is a member of the New Socialist Group in Toronto.ÿþ</font>ÿþ</font>ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ<brÿþ>ÿþ ÿþ<formÿþ>ÿþ<inputÿþ ÿþtype="button"ÿþ ÿþvalue="Close"ÿþ ÿþonclick="top.close()"ÿþ>ÿþ</form>ÿþ ÿþ</body>ÿþ ÿþ</html>ÿþ<!-- FILE ARCHIVED ON ÿþ19:41:15 Jun 26, 2010ÿþ AND RETRIEVED FROM THE INTERNET ARCHIVE ON ÿþ10:40:30 Mar 05, 2026ÿþ.
